Sarkandaugava
Sarkandaugava (Red Daugava) is the industrial cradle of Riga. Raves Sugar Refining Factory is considered the oldest Riga factory. It was built in Sarkandaugava in 1784 (now housing the Institute of Emergency and Orthopaedic Surgery, on Duntes Street)
After 1832, when J. Vērmanis bought a little factory at the end of the river fork, industry rapidly developed in this district. In a very short time an auto factory, a leather factory, mills, sawmills, an oil pressing shop, an alcohol distillery, a brewery, the rubber factory “Provodnik”, and the shoe factory “Buffalo” were established here. The Valdslehen Brewery was founded in 1865. It continues to brew beer even today, only its name has changed to “Aldaris”.
